March 19 Native Plant Seminar

The UGA Pickens County Extension Office and the Pickens County Master Gardeners will hold a Native Plant Seminar at the Pickens County Senior Center from 6-8:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 19, featuring local botanical expert and prolific writer Jim Smith and native plant expert Kathryn Gable.
Smith will kick the evening off by defining a native plant and then explaining some of their medicinal uses and propagation techniques. This last topic is of even greater interest to all gardeners as we watch our plant budgets closely. A lifetime Master Gardener, Smith is also a member and past president of the Georgia Native Plant Society, a member of both the Georgia Botanical Society and the Mountain Conservation Trust and serves as botanical advisor for the Mountain Stewards.
Native plant expert Kathryn Gable will discuss creating an attractive home garden that draws wildlife. Gable, a Georgia Wildlife Steward, also served as president of the Georgia Native Plant Society and has worked at the Georgia Perimeter College Botanical Garden since 1999.
Questions will be taken after the two talks and light refreshments provided. Although there is no charge for the program, seating is limited; register by calling Jennifer at The Depot, 706-253-8840, and check www.pickensmg.com for information on this and other programs.
