The Historic Wooden Bridge, just outside of Main Street and in front of Joe Rueffert’s Restaurant, The Woodbridge Inn, is now reopened. On Friday, February 13th, shortly after 1pm there was a ribbon cutting rededication. A crowd of about 50 crossed the new bridge to congergate on the other side. This one lane wooden truss bridge, the last such bridge bearing traffic in Georgia, spanes the Georgia Northeastern Railroad, connecting Jasper’s Main Street to Chambers and Birch streets.

Fixing the bridge cost an estimated $80,000.00. Funding for the repairs were a gift from county government, a gift from the Pickens County Development Authority and a loan from that authority to be repaid by the City of Jasper by 2010.

The Historic Wooden Bridge links two additional older structures, The Woodbridge Inn dating from the 1800′s and the Old Jail, dating in the early 1900′s.

Thank goodness the Old Wooden Bridge was repaired and is now again a part of our city’s every day road of travel. I think I’m going to make reservations at the Woodbridge Inn.
