Today marks one year since my very dear friend, Sally Barrett, passed away. I met Sally when I was just graduating from high school and she became like a mother to me. I loved to be with her and go with her anywhere and everywhere. My mother passed away when I was 11 so when Sally came into my life, she became my surrogate mother. We went everywhere together, shopping for clothes, groceries, we learned to make ceramics together, she would come out to my softball games and watch. She was a wonderful person and I loved her very much.
When I moved away, I stayed in touch with Sally. Every time I would come home, I would make a point to visit with her. She always made me feel right at home, fixing a nice lunch with dessert or meeting at a restaurant but always making time my visit.
When my son was born, I had to bring him for Sally to see. She loved him as if he were her own grandson and when he was old enough to say Mamaw, that is what he called Sally. When we would visit, Sally would make Ken his favorite foods. One was zucchini Bread and she would always make enough for him to take with him for later, the other was her home made chili.
When you’ve known a person this long in your life, and they are no longer a part of it, there is a big, deep hole in your heart. I’m glad Sally is in a much better place where she is no longer suffering and her wonderful, loving memories will forever live in my heart! I miss you Sally!
