What preventive tests do you need to stay healthy?

No matter your age and gender, certain preventive tests can help you stay healthy. This means you can identify possible conditions early on, before they become more costly and unmanageable. In most cases, these tests are covered at 100 percent under your medical plan, which means you don’t have to pay out of pocket for them.

To find out what is covered under your medical plan:

  • Call Member Services at the toll-free number on your Aetna ID card. OR
  • Visit your secure member website at www.aetna.com.

All adults should get screened for glaucoma at least every two years. Your eye doctor does a glaucoma screening during your routine eye exam. Glaucoma is a buildup of pressure in your eye. The test is important because you may not be aware that you could be slowly losing your vision. When found early, damage can be stopped or delayed.

Women age 21 and over should have a Pap test. This is a test that can find changes in the cervix that may lead to cancer. Cervical cancer can often be prevented if changes in the cervix are found and treated early.

  • Beginning at age 21 (younger if sexually active); every 1-2 years.
  • Beginning at age 30; every 2-3 years if you had normal results 3 years in a row OR
  • HPV test with a Pap test: Beginning at age 30; repeat every 3 if both tests are normal.

Women age 40 and over should have a mammogram every 1-2 years. This screening can help find cancer early, when it is too small to be felt.

It is important to know:

  • Most women with breast cancer do not have a family history.
  • You can reduce the risk of breast cancer by staying active and maintaining a healthy weight. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables and grains, and limited alcohol use may also help to reduce your risk.
