Today I attended the Relay For Life Kickoff for Pickens County and it was a huge success. The Relay for Life of Pickens County unit teams were there along with lots of Pickens County citizens who are there working toward the fight against cancer. Several people got up and spoke about why they Relay. Its either a family member or a good friend, or sometimes themselves that have fought cancer and they want to continue the fight to help others. There were some sad stories of loved ones who lost the fight against cancer and then there were the ones who, after 30 years, are still cancer free. They are thankful for the support of their family, their friends and they are thankful for God!
Each year the Pickens County Unit of the American Cancer Society joins forces with people across the nation to raise awareness of the fight against cancer in research and education with the Rely For Life. Something is provided for everyone at the overnight event and this kickoff highlighted what Pickens County citizens can do when they band together for a wonderful cause that seems to affect every family in some way or another.
Be there on Saturday, April 24 at Lee Newton Park where the 2010 the Relay For Life of Pickens County will have the ‘Light the Night with Luminaries’. Hundreds of candles will be lighting the night at Lee Newton Park – each one a tribute to someone whose life has been touched by cancer. What an inspirational sight! Candles displaying the names of all those being remembered or honored will be lining the track.
This will be a most meaningful ceremony and you are invited to participate in this year’s event by having a candle lit “IN MEMORY OF’ a loved one lost to cancer or “IN HONOR OF” a cancer Survivor. Starting Saturday afternoon, April 24, and continuing through Sunday morning, April 25th, teams from local businesses, organizations, schools, family, friends and churches will be “Relaying’ around the park to help fight this disease.
